DPM Sar Kheng: Draft Law on Civil Status Closely Concerns Daily Life of Citizens

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Interior, DPM Sar Kheng, chaired an inter-ministerial meeting to pass the draft law on ‘Civil Status, Statistics and Identification’ at the Ministry of Interior on Monday morning, 27 March 2023.

DPM Sar Kheng stated that this draft law concerns the daily life of every citizen in Cambodia, especially in regard to the registration of life events such as marriage and death.

He shared that current regulations had to be amended several times, with several complications experienced in the process, before the new law could be successfully drafted.

The draft law on civil status, statistics, and identification has 12 chapters and 182 articles.

According to DPM Sar Kheng, the draft law covers the following: registration of civil status, civil statistics, residence registration, registration of Khmer identity cards, population identity system, use of data, protection of privacy and data security, fees, inspection and parole, and more.

The Minister of Interior expressed his high praise and appreciation for the working group that drafted the law on civil status, statistics and identification. He said the working group coordinated the task of drafting the law very well, especially the organization of several national and regional seminars to ensure a comprehensive law was prepared.
